In the closing of the retreat we will spend time reflecting on our experience and being grateful for the graces of the retreat. Join us for a contemplative weekend in silence under Mary’s guidance.

Join in an intentional Advent with a worldwide community of prayerful practice:
Friday November 26 – Friday December 24, 2021
offered in partnership with Spirituality & Practice
$65 USD
This Advent e-course is a contemplative engagement with Scripture, art and music, as well as the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating and other mystical writers. This intentional retreat will not require a lot of time or reading; as a devotional retreat, it is meant to assist us in keeping our intention and attention on and in Presence, and in doing so, we continue and deepen the incarnation in ourselves.
In your light, we see light.
– Psalm 36:10In addition to video teachings from Fr. Thomas on the exemplar of Mary for the contemplative life, this e-course focuses on devotion and practice to enter the liminal depths of the season — using Lectio Divina for quiet, receptive reflection on various texts, as well as Visio Divina with art images and Musica Divina with various musical selections. These practices awaken all of senses and being, inviting inner stillness and fostering deep listening for how the Spirit is speaking and moving in our personal experience and journey.

Introduction to Centering Prayer as an 11th-Step Practice for those in 12-Step Programs
Saturday, October 30th, 2021, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Pacific Time
On Zoom
Free of charge
The primary purpose of the 12-Step outreach team of CONW is to deepen our practice of the 11th step: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” We try to pass on the simple method of Centering Prayer to others in recovery.
Centering Prayer is a type of prayer that has been used over the centuries, but it is different from what we may think of as prayer. It is simply moving deep within ourselves, in silence, saying nothing, asking for nothing, just being and allowing our Higher Power to be with us. For those who are working a recovery program, parallels can be found between the transformation that Centering Prayer brings and the process of growth facilitated as we work the 12 Steps. We believe that, when applied as a daily supplement to the 12 Steps, Centering Prayer opens us to the deepest dimension of spirituality.
This half-day Zoom workshop will introduce people in recovery to the practice of Centering Prayer, with time to learn and practice the method, ask questions, and learn about local and national resources for continuing and deepening your practice.

It will offer you the opportunity to bring closure, healing and meaning to the challenges of this past year and help you access the promise and joy of the Christmas Holy Season and the New Year.
In our virtual retreat Saturday, December 12th, you’ll be able to participate in a blend of Centering Prayer and the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, with the opportunity to share perspectives with other retreat participants through breakout rooms. Each has also set aside time for deepening the experience and practice of our faith. Ultimately, that’s a gift not only for ourselves but for those we encounter-even with social distancing! We’ll enrich our day with the practices of Visio and Musica Divina. Those will be practices you’ll be able to continue well after the retreat.
The retreat will begin at 10 am and conclude at 2 pm. Registration is $10 (scholarships are available by request), payable by check to COPSN at the address on the registration form below, or by a transfer via the Zelle service. If you wish to pay by such a transfer, simply email Jeff for details at the email below. And of course there will be a ‘break time’ for for lunch. The ‘link’ for the virtual retreat will be forwarded December 11th (the day before the retreat) to all registered participants.

We look forward to sharing the day with you!

Embracing Living: The Welcoming Prayer
Monday, October 05 – Friday, October 30
An online course offered in partnership with Spirituality & Practice: An excellent way to learn, renew or deepen a Welcoming Prayer practice. Our own Cherry Haisten is one of the presenters of this course. She is a leading presenter of the Welcoming Prayer in Contemplative Outreach and does workshops throughout the United States and internationally. This is a wonderful opportunity to benefit from her teaching.
The Welcoming Prayer is a method of consenting to God’s presence and action in our physical and emotional reactions to events and situations in daily life. If Centering Prayer (or another daily prayer) is practiced for one hour of the day, the Welcoming Prayer is for the other 23 hours. It is a “letting go” in the present moment, in the midst of the activity of ordinary life. It helps to dismantle the emotional programs of the false-self system and to heal the wounds of a lifetime by addressing them where they are stored — in the body.
Practicing the Welcoming Prayer offers us the opportunity to make choices free of the false-self system — responding instead of reacting to the present moment. Through the action of the Holy Spirit, the practice empowers us to take appropriate action as freely and lovingly as possible in any situation that presents itself.
Fee: $59.95 USD
This class will teach the practice of “Guard of the Heart” and how it compliments our Centering Prayer, and the practices of the Welcoming Prayer and the Active Prayer Phrase. We will learn the three ways any afflictive thought or emotional disturbance can be instantly released as it arises. Join us for this enriching and deepening complementary practice.

EXPLORATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT NATURE IS TRANSFORMATIVE AND HEALING FOR A SOCIETY
From our contemplative outreach network, the Center for Contemplative Living, Denver, Colorado:
Wisdom Begins in Wonder and Awe
Dr. Christine O’Brien Travers
Saturday, September 26, 2020
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Mountain Time, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Pacific Time
There are two books of scripture: Nature and the Bible. The wonder of creation demands and teaches us to see and believe that everything is a miracle and calls us into mystery, awe, silence, and surrender to the vastness beyond oneself. Being present to the wonder and awe in nature awakens the mind, triggers curiosity, and transforms the isolated self into the integrated, contemplative self. The topic will explore the scientific evidence that nature is transformative and healing for a society with nature deprivation disorder and technology driven narcissism. Integration of nature in daily life is a research proven well-being skill and a contemplative practice.
Dr. O’Brien Travers has been involved with Contemplative Outreach since 1992. As a doctor for 37 years she has seen the powerful effects of spiritual belief on health. As a mother of seven children she knows the challenges of nurturing a family with loving kindness and compassion. As Medical Director of Whole Health Program for the Cheyenne VA she uses research on neuroscience to validate and teach veterans about the human ability to transform in mind, body and soul with contemplative practice. You can register at https://www.centeringprayer.net/wisdom

Christian monastics and mystics through the ages have written about and practiced a contemplative relationship with God that takes place in silence deeper than words. Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina are two practices in this tradition. This day will offer you a brief starter on the contemplative path that has called many to a lifetime of study and fidelity.
In the morning, we will focus on Centering Prayer, a contemporary adaptation that provides a method for sitting in silent prayer. In the afternoon, we will focus on Lectio Divina, an ancient contemplative way of relating to scripture. You will learn the basics and have an opportunity to practice each practice.
May this small taste whet your appetite for more exploration of the riches of our Christian contemplative tradition.
Presenter: Cherry Haisten serves on the Contemplative Outreach national team for the Welcoming Prayer, travels widely to lead workshops as a part of Contemplative Outreach’s Living Flame program, and facilitates contemplative retreats focusing on a variety of themes. Healing our Violence through the Journey of Centering Prayer
Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2018
1:30 – 5:30 PM followed by a Taize Prayer Service at 6:00 PM.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
111 NE 80th Street, Seattle, WA
Description: Join Contemplative Outreach Northwest for a retreat to celebrate silence as a source of transformation and relationship with our Creator and with all creation. We will pray together in silence and there will be time for quiet reflection, journaling or walking the labyrinth to deepen your experience.
At the same time, we will turn our ear of the heart to the voices of Thomas Keating and Richard Rohr from their retreat on healing our violence through the journey of Centering Prayer. They challenge us to “confront our inner and social violence and bring it to healing and transformation in a sacred and ecumenical context.” The Taize Prayer Service will complete this contemplative day where we listen to God in silence, scripture reading and Taize singing – simple, meditative songs repeated several times as they begin to sing themselves into our souls. (Resource Material)
The Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Contemplative Outreach Northwest was held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
The retreat booklet from the 1987 Centering Prayer intensive retreat with Father Thomas Keating that was held at Indianola, Washington, from September 11 – 18, 1987 can be viewed here. It was presented to the retreat by Paul Peterhans, the first Coordinator of Contemplative Outreach Northwest and contains excerpts and readings from: Psalms, Gospels, Literature, Poetry, Physics, Psychology, Sacred Traditions, and Christian Contemplative Spirituality.
